Breastfeeding After Going back to Work: How to Get Organised

Everything you need to know about expressing milk

  • When should you start expressing milk before going back to work?
  • Which breast pump is right for you?
  • What's the best way to store expressed milk?
  • How can you introduce a bottle to your baby without disrupting breastfeeding?

The Back-to-Work Box

Whether you're looking forward to returning to work or feeling a little anxious about it, going back marks the start of a new chapter. You're balancing sleepless nights with busy days, finding a new work-life rhythm, settling into a fresh routine, and rediscovering your place at work, all at once.

We asked ourselves what Popote could do to help make this transition a little easier. The answer was simple: offer a little support, comfort and encouragement when it's needed most.

That's how the Back-to-Work Box came to life. It's a thoughtful collection of little things designed to make returning to work feel just a bit easier.

Treat yourself, gift one to a colleague, suggest it to your employer, or send it to a friend who's just gone back to work.

Frequently asked questions from our favourite parents

How to choose a breast pump for expressing at work?

The double electric breast pump remains the most efficient and easiest to use at work. Good news: you can hire one, and with a prescription, the NHS may cover the cost. Also check the size of your breast shields (the part that sits against your breast): if they're too small or too large, they can affect your milk output.

How much breast milk should you prepare for nursery or a childminder?

A breastfed baby doesn't follow the same rhythm as a formula-fed baby — they feed more often and in smaller amounts. As a general rule, allow around 30 ml per hour of care, spread across several small containers of 60 to 120 ml maximum, adjusted according to your baby's appetite by whoever is looking after them.

Frequently asked questions from our favourite parents

Can the products be frozen?

Our (delicious) little purées are cooked and then sterilised (heated to a high temperature) to preserve them.
You can freeze them, provided you follow a few guidelines (though the ingredients may lose a little flavour):
– Don’t put the pouch straight into the freezer, as freezing may affect its structure.
– First pour the contents into a suitable container (an ice cube tray, for example), or cook with them before freezing.
– Never refreeze a product once it has thawed.
Parent tip: use our little pouches to make recipes for your baby, then freeze them to keep them for longer!

How long does a pouch keep once opened?

Once opened, our baby food pouches can be kept in the fridge for up to 48 hours for fruit, vegetables and yoghurt-style blends, and up to 36 hours for meat, fish and little meal pouches, provided they are stored hygienically with the cap firmly closed.

Should I add fat to your products?

Our pouches contain no added fat (except the two Little Meals pouches).
And as you’ve probably guessed, babies need fat! You can therefore add one teaspoon of oil a day to the purée between 4 and 12 months, and two teaspoons between 12 and 36 months, after heating it up.

My baby is allergic to cow’s milk protein

None of our pouches contain traces of cow’s milk protein, except our plain and vanilla yoghurt-style blends, porridge, little meals and possibly our beef and veal pouches.
But don’t worry! We’ve thought of that too with our plant-based blends: plenty for babies with a cow’s milk protein allergy to discover, including Oat & Apple and Coconut & Banana (please note that these are low in calcium).
Psst, all our machines are cleaned before each new production run, so there’s no risk of cross-contamination.
