Understanding baby formula

We genuinely used to find baby formula complicated.
But we dug in, broke it all down, met people, listened — and now that we've (almost) become
experts on the subject, we thought we'd share what we know and help you find your way too.

Baby formula, breast milk — what's the difference?

Nature being wonderfully designed, it has provided everything needed to ensure the survival and optimal development of babies through breast milk. It's an INCREDIBLE liquid — alive and adapting in real time to babies' needs (my body, what a hero!).

And even if we'll never quite match it, technology today allows us to try to replicate it, ensuring all of Baby's essential needs are met. Baby formula therefore provides the energy and nutrients (macro and micro) that little tummies need to grow and develop.

How is baby formula made?

To make baby formula, you start with… milk! But because breast milk is very different from cow's milk, the formula needs to be reworked to align it with Baby's specific needs.

So we remove, add, adjust and analyse (a lot)… before becoming the powdered milk you use every day, effortlessly, to delight Baby!

How to choose your baby formula?

All baby formulas on the market follow the same regulations, so there's not much room for improvisation!

Choosing your baby formula means making choices that align with your values: French or not, ORGANIC or not, cow's milk, goat's milk or plant-based, with or without probiotics… As long as it suits Baby (you know who you are)!

What's in baby formula?

In the top 3 of life's most confusing things: IKEA furniture instructions, your tax return, and the ingredient list on baby formulas!

You'll find ingredients derived from milk (cream, whey, permeate…), which naturally provide some of the essential nutrients Baby needs. And then everything else, added to make up for what's missing or to rebalance nutrient proportions. Proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins… all the key nutrients to help your Baby grow.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions from our customers and community

Can you freeze the products?

Our (delicious) little purées have been cooked and then sterilised (heated to a high temperature) to ensure their preservation.
You can freeze them without any problem by following a few guidelines (the ingredients may however lose a little of their flavour):

  • Do not place the pouch directly in the freezer, as its structure may be affected by freezing.
  • Pour them into a suitable container first (an ice cube tray, for example), or cook them before freezing.
  • Never refreeze a product that has already been defrosted.

Parent tip: use our little pouches to cook recipes for your baby, then freeze them to keep them for longer!

Once opened, how long does the pouch keep?

Once opened, fruits, vegetables and yogurt-style pouches keep for 48 hours in the fridge, and 36 hours for little meals and meat/fish. And of course, you can freeze the rest of your pouches by pouring them into an ice cube tray — perfect for making handy little portions ready to whip out when Baby is hungry.

Should you add fat to your products?

There is no added fat in our pouches (except in the complete little meals).
And as you might expect, fat is essential for Baby! You can therefore add one teaspoon of oil per day between 4 and 12 months, and 2 teaspoons between 12 and 36 months, into the purée after warming it up.

Can you warm up the pouches?

Just like glass baby food jars, our pouches can be warmed up. At Popote, we recommend pouring the contents of your pouches into a suitable container before heating in the microwave or in a bain-marie. Make sure to check the temperature of the food before giving it to your baby.
WARNING: never put the pouch directly in the microwave. Never store a pouch whose contents have already been warmed up in its packaging.
