Baby at 10 months everything you need to know about weaning

How to get started?

Weaning at 10 months: a key milestone

At 10 months, weaning continues along the same lines as previous months: Baby keeps discovering new flavours and gradually gets used to (larger) soft pieces. Here are all our tips for continuing to diversify their diet by the book!

What's new on Baby's plate at 10 months?

If it hasn't been done yet, now is the perfect time to introduce new textures: smooth purées no longer have to be the only option on the menu! You can start introducing your little one to several foods in (larger) soft chunks. At 10 months, Baby is also starting to sprout little teeth, which can help them better accept this new experience. But don't panic if they're still turning their nose up at new textures: go back to smoother purées and compotes (roughly mashed) and try again later.

We're Popote, the ideal brand to get started with Baby's weaning journey with ORGANIC products made in France!

We're with you every step of the way through weaning with Baby.

What can baby eat at 10 months?

At 10 months, weaning is already well under way, so baby can eat almost like a grown-up. Vegetables, starchy foods, fruits, meats, fish, eggs, pulses: keep varying the flavours by regularly introducing new foods. But at this age, some foods should still be avoided in their diet.

Which vegetables for a 10-month-old baby?

‎

At this stage of weaning, vegetables are already well known to your child. All varieties can be cooked! Where possible, favour seasonal vegetables, and vary them as much as possible to really awaken Baby's palate — but never force your child to eat if they are reluctant to try a new vegetable. And on those hectic days, give them a Popote purée made with delicious organic vegetables, with no unnecessary additives.

‎

How should I prepare vegetables for Baby?

‎

We can now give Baby mashed or roughly crushed vegetable purées, as well as whole pieces. To develop their fine motor skills, don't hesitate to let them pick up the food themselves (only if it is not too hot of course, and while keeping an eye on them). They will love doing it themselves, completely independently — on that note, discover baby-led weaning. But make sure the pieces are large enough and soft enough to avoid any risk of choking. To achieve an easy-to-eat texture, cook vegetables in water or steam them.

How much vegetables at 10 months?

‎

Aim for 100 to 150 grams of vegetable purée per meal, adjusted according to your child's needs and preferences.

Which fruits for a 10-month-old baby?

At 10 months, your child can eat all fruits without exception. Introduce new varieties to spark their curiosity and give them a taste for these fibre- and vitamin-rich foods. Exotic fruits, berries, citrus fruits…

‎

In terms of textures, anything goes here too: blended, mashed, grated, or simply crushed fruit. Whatever the variety, always cut pieces of very ripe fruit that melt in the mouth and let your child take care of the rest! And on those days when your schedule is packed, treat them to a delicious baby fruit compote.

‎

Offer Baby between 120 and 200 g of fruit per day — that's one to two Popote pouches!

Which starchy foods for my 10-month-old baby?

There's more to life than pasta and rice (or potatoes)! At 10 months, Baby can enjoy all starchy foods. Think bulgur wheat, sweetcorn or quinoa, and don't forget pulses (such as lentils or white and red beans), which have the advantage of being rich in vitamins, minerals and protein.

‎

How much starchy food at 10 months?

‎

Now that Baby has tried all the starchy foods, we can increase the quantities a little. This little one needs proper fuel! Start with a base of 150 g of starchy foods, spread over 1 or 2 meals, depending on Baby's hunger, preferences and the time of day. Discover Popote's little pieces with a mix of vegetables and starchy food. Life's pretty good, isn't it?

Which proteins for my 10-month-old baby?

At 10 months, weaning includes a very wide variety of meats and fish. But you still need to be vigilant at times: the consumption of certain products must still be limited, or avoided altogether depending on the case.

  • All types of meat can be given to Baby: beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, duck… We do favour white meats, which are lower in fat, even if we occasionally alternate with beef, for example, or lamb if your child enjoys it. However, it is still too early for offal and processed meats, except for cooked ham. And remember that meat must be served very well cooked (no rare cooking for now).
  • For fish, alternate between white fish and oily fish, but do not yet give shellfish, crustaceans, or raw fish (Baby will have plenty of time to discover sushi later on). Certain species of fish should also be avoided (shark, swordfish, marlin, lamprey) or limited (monkfish, bonito, skate, sea bream, halibut, tuna) until the age of 3.

‎

How much protein at 10 months?

‎

You can move on to 20–25 g of well-cooked meat or fish per day, which is 1/3 of a Popote meat purée, or 1/2 a hard-boiled egg mashed into the vegetable purée.

Which fats should I favour for my 10-month-old baby?

We introduced raw oils and unsalted butter from 4 months in purées. So we try to vary the different oils as much as possible so that Baby benefits from their different advantages: rapeseed, walnut, sunflower, olive…

‎

How much fat at 10 months?

‎

You can give a teaspoon of oil per day, or a knob of butter from time to time mixed into the purée. To find out more about the quantities to follow between 9 and 12 months, click here.

‎

Good to know: do not heat or cook the oil, otherwise you lose its nutritional benefits — add it to the purée right at the end. Also think about the good fats provided by animal sources such as meat and oily fish. Their contribution of essential fatty acids is really valuable.

‎

Which dairy products for my 10-month-old baby?

At 10 months, Baby can enjoy many dairy products, at mealtimes or as a snack: fromage brassé, petit-suisse, fromage blanc, pasteurised cheese. We do favour full-fat dairy products as much as possible, and we do not give raw milk cheeses, except for cooked pressed cheeses (Emmental, Comté, Abondance, Gruyère IGP, Beaufort…). These products must still be complemented by infant or breast milk, which remains the basis of dairy nutrition at this age.

‎

How much dairy at 10 months?

‎

Keep one dairy portion per meal: pasteurised cheese, fromage brassé, fromage blanc and of course infant formula or breast milk. Per meal, you can give: one yogurt, 15 g of cheese or 100 g of fromage blanc, for example. For milk, keep 2 bottles per day of follow-on infant milk, or breast milk on demand if breastfeeding. Around 10 months, some children may start to discover growing-up milk. But always ask your paediatrician for advice to know whether the time is right.

How do I know if my 10-month-old baby is eating too much or not enough?

As long as Baby is growing and gaining weight in line with their growth curve, you have nothing to worry about. This means they are eating enough, and the quantities you are giving them are sufficient. But do ask your paediatrician if you need reassurance on this point.

FAQ on weaning at 10 months

Frequently asked questions from our customers and community

Can you give spices to a 10-month-old baby?

Several spices and aromatic herbs can be used to season your 10-month-old's meals, but still in (very) small quantities. Start with mild spices such as cinnamon, cumin, and vanilla, then introduce turmeric or curry. However, it is still too early to give them pepper, chilli, ginger, or galangal.

How many solid meals per day at 10 months?

At 10 months, your child can eat three "solid" or semi-solid meals a day, spread out according to their preferences. To discover a typical menu for a 10-month-old baby, it's here.

My 10-month-old is refusing proteins — what should I do?

If your baby refuses, never force them to eat — instead, try offering a different source of protein (eggs, for example, or a different type of fish or meat). If, after several days, your baby still won't eat any protein, make an appointment with your paediatrician.

What foods are off-limits at 10 months?

Several foods should still be avoided in youryour 10-month-old baby's diet. No honey (not before 1 year), no sugary or ultra-processed products, no raw meat or fish, shellfish, unpasteurised cheeses, cow's milk, offal, cured meats (except cooked ham) and certain types of fish.
